The Rare Book Module provides an additional manner to control the material during digitization; it allows the cradle itself to be raised or lowered. It is a valuable tool, and will likely widen the variety of material that your conservation team is comfortable with when using the BC100.
On the Rare Book Module there is a separate control for the glass and cradle. For especially rare materials the book can be lowered (below the contact point) before raising the glass, turning the page, and lowering the glass. In that workflow the glass is not coming into contact with the page when it is lowered, but instead comes to a rest on the metal V hard-stop, and then the book is slowly raised to make as little or as much contact with the glass as the operator desires.
