Highlights from Past Presentations
2023: “De-risking the process of Cultural Heritage Digitisation – Providing a centralised centre for Western Australia”
Expert, Ben Heath, Senior Photographer for the Digitisation Centre of Western Australia, discussed how in 2020, Perth’s universities, the State Library of Western Australia, and the West Australian Museum established the Digitisation Centre of Western Australia (DCWA) with a government grant. The state-of-the-art facility aims to digitise cultural heritage collections within a decade, providing top-tier services to local institutions and offering a collaborative alternative to Eastern state providers. Ben, involved from the start, will highlight the Centre’s development and showcase its impact on the community through various digitised collections.
2023: “The Nitty-gritty and Not-so-pretty: Imaging Decisions in Cultural Heritage Digitization”
Photography combines instinct and experience. How do you best digitally represent an object? Decisions can be methodical or require on-the-spot problem-solving. Astrid Smith, Stanford University and Christine Huhn, University of California, Berkeley with over a decade of cultural heritage imaging experience each, will discuss their approaches, highlighting how imaging choices impact digital objects. They aim to inspire the creation of guidelines for making thoughtful decisions during digitization.
2022: Effective Engaging with Communities for Equitable Digital Preservation Ecosystems
In this presentation, Tamar Evangelestia-Dougherty, the Director of the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives, explored the concept of “Effective Engaging with Communities for Equitable Digital Preservation Ecosystems.”
2022: Transformation, Discovery, Digitization Funding and Contributed Support Before digitization, the Cape Cod Museum of Art’s permanent collection was inaccessible to both the public and its curatorial staff. Benton Jones, Director of Art at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, will share how he secured funding for digitization in summer 2022 through matching grants and support, highlighting the importance of accessibility for his small, regionally focused art museum. He will discuss the facility and staff transformation required, the challenges of a collection stifling an institution, and how digitization has recalibrated the museum’s strategic plan, mission, and vision, while conserving and curating the collection.
