Course Description:
Understanding the potential and limitations of AI is crucial in cultural heritage settings. This course commences with an introduction to AI within a heritage context, followed by three case studies demonstrating how AI can augment collections metadata through entity extraction, context-specific geomapping, image segmentation, caption generation, and refinement using Large Language Models. We’ll then delve into developing frameworks for evaluating AI, covering aspects such as stakeholder involvement, defining research questions and project objectives, the role of pilot projects, and criteria for measuring success. Throughout, we’ll emphasize ethical considerations and the potential for bias, alongside efficiency and Return on Investment (ROI). And yes, AI played a part in crafting this description.
Intended Audience:
This course is tailored for digitization program managers, collection managers, and professionals responsible for digitization and metadata project management. No prerequisite knowledge is required.

- Julie McVey: Senior Manager of Digital Collections at the National Geographic Society’s Special Collections. With expertise in digital curation, metadata standards, and technology innovations, Julie holds an MA in History and an MLIS from the University of Maryland, College Park.
- Doug Peterson: Co-owner and Head of R+D and Product Management at Digital Transitions. Doug brings a wealth of experience, holding a BS in Commercial Photography from Ohio University. He has authored several technical guidelines and recommendations for cultural heritage digitization and is a member of ISO TC 42, contributing to digitization standards.
