Background

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, in addition to the tragic loss of lives and resources, the cultural heritage of the country has been put at unimaginable risk. In fact, many artifacts have already been destroyed, stolen, or damaged. Digital Transitions (DT), one of the world’s leading providers of digitization solutions, is helping to mitigate this by working with local institutions and global preservation organizations to provide digitization equipment, exchange digitization knowledge, and offer training to help preserve Ukraine’s valuable historical records.

With the imminent threat to Ukraine, DT is now launching a collaborative digital preservation project with The National Reserve – Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. As part of the project, DT sent a complete short-term loan, pro bono digitization system, the DT Atom, to Ukraine.

Today, the Lavra collection consists of more than 72,000 museum items, including icons, engravings, old prints, manuscripts, and vestments. DT representatives have set up the digitization system, and are currently in the process of conducting a customized 2-week training program for the staff of Lavra and its partners. This course is focused on the use of digital equipment, workflows and digitization pipeline, and is aimed at digitizing approximately 15,000 items and documents  from the Preserve’s fund.
